The Space Exploration Instrument

Watches have played a crucial role in outer space exploration, serving as reliable timekeeping instruments in environments where precision is vital. From the Omega Speedmaster—famously worn during the Apollo missions and dubbed the “Moonwatch”—to modern digital and atomic watches aboard the International Space Station, these timepieces endure extreme temperatures, zero gravity, and radiation. In space, a watch isn’t just an accessory; it’s a lifeline for mission timing, navigation, and synchronization. Their durability and accuracy symbolize humanity’s pursuit of exploration beyond Earth’s boundaries.

The most famous person to wear a Seiko Speedtimer chronograph is Colonel William R. Pogue, an American astronaut who wore a Seiko 6139 "Pogue" on the Skylab 4 mission in 1973. He was the first American in space to wear an automatic chronograph watch. His original 6139-6005 with a vibrant yellow dial and "Pepsi" bezel became an iconic and highly collectible timepiece among Seiko enthusiasts. Seiko has since released modern Prospex Speedtimer models, such as the SSC947, inspired by the "Pogue" legacy.
